Waris Shah: The Poet of Love and Sufism
Waris Shah was born in 1722 in Jandiala Sher Khan, Punjab, present-day Pakistan, into a reputed Sayyid family. He was a descendant of Sayyid Muhammad Al-Makki, a companion of Prophet Muhammad. His father's name was Gulsher Shah and mother's name was Kamal Banu. Waris lost his parents at a young age and spent his childhood in search of a spiritual guide. He became a disciple of Hafiz Ghulam Murtaza, an ustad from Kasur, who taught him poetry and mysticism. Waris was well-versed in Arabic, Persian and Punjabi languages and had a deep knowledge of Islamic scriptures and Sufi literature.
Waris Shah is considered one of the greatest poets of Punjabi literature and a pioneer of the Kafi genre, a form of classical poetry that expresses love for the Divine Beloved. He wrote many poems on various themes such as devotion, ethics, social criticism and humanism. However, he is best known for his magnum opus Heer Ranjha, a tragic romance based on a folk tale that narrates the love story of Heer, a beautiful girl from Jhang, and Ranjha, a handsome shepherd from Takht Hazara. Waris Shah wrote Heer Ranjha in 1766 when he was living in Malka Hans, a village near Pakpattan, where he spent his last days.
Heer Ranjha is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Punjabi literature and a symbol of Punjabi culture. It is also a profound expression of Waris Shah's Sufi vision, as he portrays Heer and Ranjha as lovers who seek union with God through their love for each other. Waris Shah uses rich imagery, symbolism, metaphors and allegories to convey his message of love, faith and sacrifice. He also criticizes the hypocrisy, corruption and injustice of the society and the clergy that oppose the lovers. Heer Ranjha is not only a romantic epic but also a spiritual guide that inspires millions of people to follow the path of love and Sufism. 061ffe29dd
